Formation and progress
After preliminary meetings held on 5th and 18th November the Club was duly formed on the 25th November 1912, at a meeting in the Council House, at which the Chairman, Mr W Funge, announced that the Club Premises would be set up at No. 13 Lampton Road.
The start was made in a modest way, the furniture and fittings being obtained by hire. The next step was the erection of a building in the Club grounds to accommodate two billiard tables.
In 1925 the premises in Alexandra Road were purchased, a mortgage being raised for this purpose. An annexe to hold three billiard tables was added to the Club, largely through a series of loans from the members.
The Bowling Green was constructed in the year 1927, and was tried out that year for a short period. This venture was covered by loans.
In 1930 the billiards annexe was enlarged to accommodate six tables, which entailed still further loans, in each case the members supplying the capital.
It was not until the end of 1943 that the mortgage and the remaining loans were finally redeemed.
The whole freehold premises since then have been the property of the members.
The 50th anniversary of the Club's formation was celebrated on 24th November 1962. At the same time the new considerably improved bar and lounge were officially opened.
During 1972/3, the lounge and bar were enlarged at a cost of £32,000. They were completed and officially opened by Barney Hayhoe MP on 22nd December 1973.
In 2005 the Alexandra Road site became part of the Hounslow Town Centre redevelopment, and the Club moved to purpose built premises in Gresham Road on 24th November.
The Club was officially opened by Michael Ancram QC, MP, President of the Association of Conservative Clubs |
